Strasbourg: lively historical centre with its marvelous Gothic Cathedral and nearby Colmar where I visited "Petite Venice" with pittoresque half-timbered buildings along a canal. The Covered market is another bijoux with many local products on display, and for tasting a glass of Alsatian wine. Mulhouse: Cité de l'Automobile "Collection Schlumpf". Nancy: Place Stanislas (UNESCO) with its opulent buildings.Lewarde: France's largest Mining museum and guided tour of the galleries (UNESCO). Loire Valley: 3 top castles: Chateau de Chambord , Chateau de Cheverny, Chateau de Chaumont near the town of Amboise, the final resting place of Leonardo da Vinci at Clos Lucé. Beaune: wine tasting place par exellence (Marché au Vins), old hospital (constr.1443) called Hotel-Dieu des Hospices de Beaune with its Grande Salle and pharmacy. The gastronomique capital of France, Lyon (UNESCO's Vieux Lyon), Traboules, Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière, the huge art deco brasserie of Georges. Besancon: Vauban built citadel from the 17th century (UNESCO), 35 km southwest is Saline Royale (Royal Saltworks, UNESCO) in Arc-et-Senans. Dordogne: Sarlat-La-Caneda, in the heart of Périgord, medieval town with picturesque narrow streets, and lively Saturday gourmet market with truffle, foie gras and other gastronomic specialities. (Wednesday only morning). Montignac village and its nearby prehistoric Lascaux cave paintings. Bordeaux, the largest urban UNESCO site: Place de la Bourse, the left bank of the Garonne is France's most splendid riverside promenade. La Cité du Vin and wine tasting tours to St.Emilion, Médoc etc., La Grosse Cloche, the old belfry of the town hall, Rue Sainte-Catherine, the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe. Lourdes as a world famous pilgrimage site. Carcassonne (UNESCO) fortification with 52 stone towers, nicely illuminated at night. Nimes: might be the best preserved Roman Amphitheatre. Nice: Promenade des Anglais, Vieille Ville with its Italian feel, Musée Marc Chagall, Cannes and St. Tropez with its castle, great view, just 4 km out of town lies famous "Tahiti beach". Corsica: this rugged island beauty has its own culture, and a long time love-hate relationship with France, but short of full independance. Gulf of Porto (UNESCO) with Scandola Nature Reserve, Bonifacio Citadel, Ajaccio , Palais Fesch Art Museum, and the best beach I have seen in France:plage de Saleccia, less than 2 hours west of Bastia. St.Emilion wine region UNESCO, Corduan Lighthouse UNESCO, Saint-Savin sur Gartempe monastery UNESCO. Toulouse visit Aeroscopia aviation museum, Marché Victor Hugo, Musée Saint Raymond, Basilique Saint-Sernin and the Canal du Midi UNESCO.
